Hey, Jaan here. With a special issue!
Want to hear one of my mantras?
Haha, like you'd have a choice. Here goes:
"Information wants to be free"
Yeah, it's that easy.
My gut says that we will be able to make a real impact with the EV Universe.
Instead of gating the information behind hefty paywalls, we'll make sure every electric vehicle startup, enthusiast, founder, or investor in the EV industry gets the chance to stay up to date with the data they need.
Because we need every one of these people to have the highest chance of succeeding. For the planet, for ourselves and our kids.
So, while this here might seem an amateur effort to the already-bigger companies that can afford $,$$$ on sales reports, this one here is for everyone else.
It took me a few weeks to put these sales spreadsheets together. I do all of the EV Universe without a team so expect me to gradually upgrade these as we go along.
Currently, it holds the information on 98% of the world's BEV sales in 2022 per country, and about 70% of the same per carmakers. I'm linking directly to about 40 sources so you could dig deeper, and went through a few hundred sources to bring this to you.
Have fun digging in!

Before we kick off with the data, let's talk about... data. I'm always excited when sponsors come out from among our EV Universe readers!
Smartcar is a vehicle data company that powers several EV startups among our EV Universe here with their EV API. So let's just say that they are one of us.
As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to accelerate, the need for innovative and sustainable charging solutions is becoming increasingly urgent.
In this upcoming webinar, we will explore how vehicle telematics revolutionizes EV charging for vehicle owners.
Through the integration of cutting-edge technologies, EV owners can now experience the benefits of smart charging – a program that not only lowers energy bills but also makes the grid more flexible and resilient.
Our expert speakers from Smartcar and AmpX will dive into the intricacies of smart charging and how it can help EV owners schedule charging during off-peak hours to take advantage of:
You will also discover how smart charging can help the grid by:

The spreadsheet is here and some insights below. Every row in the sheet has sources listed in column S. I've mapped 41 countries/regions so far.
Reminder: I only talk about battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) here, which is also what I mean when I write "EV". No hybrids of any kind are counted.
If you see any numbers that are off or can fill in the gaps I have on the sheet - please reach out! I'll keep updating these.
🌎 80,998,034 light-duty vehicles were sold on Earth in 2022.
🌎 7,657,277 of these were battery-electric vehicles. Which puts the world at a 9.45% EV mix. Almost every 10th new car hitting the roads was all-electric. EV sales grew 59.9% compared to last year. That's huge.
The top three best-selling EVs globally were:
I'll take a second here to thank our friends at EV-Volumes , José Pontes and Viktor Irle, for sharing the total sales figure with us. To all of our readers: If you're in need of their next-level sales data compared to mine, let me know and I'll connect you.
The 7.66M BEV sales is what we'll start dividing up below and use as a reference.
🇨🇳 5,033,000 of the EVs were sold in China. That's 65.7%, or almost two out of three BEVs sold last year.
This records an 84.1% year-over-year growth and, maybe even more importantly, a 21.36% share of all sales.
Every fifth new car bought in the world's biggest auto market, China, was fully electric.
The jump is remarkable from a 10.5% EV mix in 2021.
Top three EVs in China:
🇪🇺 1,575,079 were sold in Europe, 21.36% of all BEVs. The growth here compared to the last year was 29.3%, and 13.95% of all vehicles sold were electric (up from 9.1% in 2021). Note that I include all of Europe (EU26+EFTA+UK) here.
Top three EV models in Europe:
🇺🇸 733,346 were sold in the United States, 13.95% of all BEVs. The growth here compared to the last year was 59.6% and market share of all vehicles, 5.35%.
I'm yet to validate if we should use the data from Argonne (733k) or Kelley Blue Book (810k), but let's go with the conservative here until I settle it. It does also line up with NADA/Wards data, so I'll lean towards the former. ( link )
Top three EV models in the US:
If my data is right here (and I think it is), China+Europe+US made up 95.87% of all BEV sales.
Now, let's dig deeper into a selection of the other markets.
🇩🇪 Almost every third EV (29.8%) sold in Europe was sold in its largest car market, Germany. With 470,559 sales, EVs grew 32.2% over 2021 and now take up a 17.75% market share.
The same goes for the US... its largest car market, California, was responsible for 39.9% of all EV sales in the US. California's EV mix is at 16%.
Consider this. The largest car markets, real leaders in the auto world — China (21% BEVs), California for the US (16%), and Germany (18%) for Europe — already have reached what I'd call an unstoppable market share. There's no turning back and there's an obvious path forward.
Understandably, other factors are at play in why people might be able to go EV there, but one thing is for sure. These regions are trendsetters. Sooner or later, these effects will trickle down to the regions they influence.
🇳🇴 Everyone knows Norway is the leader. And it's true. This year, with 138,292 sales it had a BEV mix of 79.3%.
Here's a great related chart I found from Eyvind, showing the powertrain mix of the Norwegian car sales from 2011 to today (link):
It seems that the Northern and Western Europe countries nearby are catching up surprisingly fast:
🇮🇹 The only country I've found so far that had decreased in sales compared to 2021 was Italy, which had -26.7% EVs sold at 49,536 units. Its overall car market decreased too, but at a slower rate of -9.7%.
Japan seems to still be the victim of its Toyota-heritage, with only an 0.75% market share for all-electric vehicles, at 31,592 sales. To be fair, the BEV count did grow 49.4% from the year before.
I found zero English sources, but managed to get the data out of Japanese sites - the EV sales in Japan were dominated by Nissan (51%) and imported EVs (45.4%). Toyota held 2% of the country's BEV share. Will this change?
Australia recorded a massive 169% year-over-year increase in EV sales, to 33,410 EVs in 2022. It is, however, still only 3.10% of the market there. Looking at the sentiment it seems we can expect this massive growth to continue. Tesla was responsible for 58.6% of the EV sales in Australia..
🇳🇿 New Zealand isn't far from Australia with its 135% increase, but as a smaller market this means 16,223 units and a healthy 14% market share.
Both markets have Tesla Model Y & Model 3 take top spots, followed by the newcomer BYD Atto 3, which we can also assume to gain momentum this year.
You'll see from the spreadsheet that I've got quite a few countries yet to map out. And to find out the top three BEVst-sellers in the currently blank cells too. If you have information on any of these, feel free to send 'em my way.

That's about it for the EV sales per country. For now.
Tomorrow, I'll send you the other point of view — EV sales per automakers. Lots of interesting stuff there.
Meanwhile, please share this overview in an article format here and the spreadsheet here .
The more eyeballs we get on this the bigger the chance we can make a real impact on the same numbers for next year.
