Hey, Jaan here.
Special issues back-to-back. Got to make up for not sending you a newsletter last week, don't we? I hope you liked yesterday's EV Sales per country overview.
Today will be the last you'll hear from me for a little while... but about that on another day.
Introducing, another angle to look at the EV Universe: global EV Sales of 2022, mapped per carmakers.
All I keep thinking when putting all this data together is: What an awesome world we live in!

The spreadsheet of sales per OEMs is here and you'll find some core insights below.
Here are a few reminders:
Ready? Here's our starting point:
🌎 7,657,277 battery-electric vehicles.
This is where we start. Every 10th light-duty vehicle in the world is in our scope.
Now, since automakers like to take their time with releasing sales data, our OEM spreadsheet isn't 98% mapped yet as the country one was.
Currently, we're holding 5,528,610 (72.2%) of all BEVs here, from over 41 brands. I think we can draw plenty of conclusions already.
It is still Tesla and BYD world Universe and we're just living in it. Together, they sold 29% of all BEVs that hit the road last year.
The BEVst seller auto brands of 2022 are:
These 10 brands sold 4.07M EVs, together accounting for 53% of all sales in the EV Universe.
We'll find several brands here that aren't familiar to us in Europe or US, but this is to be expected considering China counts for 2 out 3 EV sales. Also, these brands will be familiar to us soon, as they are expanding in Europe as we speak.
In fact, according to Schmidt Automotive, Chinese automakers delivered ~94,700 BEVs in Western-Europe in 2022. This would mean just over 6% of all EVs sold in Europe.
Now, reporting auto sales is actually pretty messy. It becomes a bit harder to classify the automakers, especially the sales of the joint ventures.
We've looked at the top brands, now let's take a look at the same thing from the automotive group (messy) lens:
This top 10 holds ~5M EVs, or 65.2% of all BEVs sold in the observable Universe.
A wild card that would be set in somewhere in the middle of this top would likely be Hyundai-Kia, but I left it out currently for the lack of reliable data.
I am also still missing global data from Renault and Nissan, which might fit in here if you consider their Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.
Further down in sales, we're also missing global numbers for Ford, DongFeng, Toyota, Mazda. Will update when these become available.
BYD's growth is unbelievable.
So, just so we leave a trace of this: BYD grew its BEV sales from 321k to 911k this year (184% YoY). What makes it even crazier is that it made another 946,329 PHEVs during the year, to a total of 1.86M units produced.
For comparison, it took Tesla two years for a similar jump from 367k to 936k in 2019-2021, although admittedly the factors are different for both.
To put BYD's almost-triple growth into context, I put all carmakers and groups that sold over 100k EVs/year on a chart together. And since maintaining growth numbers at a higher scale is a lot harder, I added their respective 2022 sales on the bars (sideways) as well.
Here's who is growing fastest:
I like seeing the magazine cover face of automakers, which is clearly electric, and then the reality in terms of the share of BEVs in their sales mix (Column F). This is especially evident with German automakers, but elsewhere too:
Let's go over some EV makers that we've talked a lot about but are still a bit earlier in their production ramps:
Top three EVs globally, in China, Europe and the US last year:
Reminder: per our data, China+Europe+US made up 95.87% of all BEV sales.
I've also found that the Model Y was the best-selling EV in these markets so far:
I think we're done with the overview of what I've got so far. I'll likely brief you again once the rest of the 25%+ data comes in from the OEMs.
Meanwhile, I hope it helped you get a clearer picture of where we stand.
I have to share this one piece of news with you. From today:
The European Parliament now made it official that no new passenger cars with combustion engines may be registered after 2035 in the EU.
And interestingly, the motion to allow the so-called e-fuels as an exception of the regulation was rejected. ( link )
